    Default Noisy Corsa C 1.2 16V engine

Does anyone know anything about these awful little engines in this ****ing terrible little car?

My girfriend has one and it is the noisiest rattliest thing I've ever heard, imaging 10 XUDs in a line on idle and you've got the picture.

I know they have a timing chain which can stretch and start slapping against stuff as well as a hydrauliclly opperated tensioner which can fail if you don't keep ontop of the servicing ( and this car hasn't been the best looked after)
Is putting a whole new chain/tensioner kit the only solution and how much of Easter weekend are we looking at here?

Whip the rocker covers off and check the cams for damage. I had one come to me like it.

Ticking noise on tickover, clattery high pitched noise when revved.

Caused by lack of servicing. One side of the head wasnt getting any oil.

also, check the cam bearing caps to see if they are loose, just had to put new bolts in and loctite them the girlfriends.

this is a known problem on the 1.0, 1.2 and 1.4 engines according to a few garages i have spoken to

Already done an oil change on it; had a small effect but not really noticeable.

Problem is the web is full of conflicting advice, 80% of it says get a new chain, tensioners, and chain guides, while the rest says spending upwards of 80 on the kit is a waste of money. Just drop the sump instead because the oil pick up might be blocked. What to do eh? Trouble is I can't really be arsed but if I take it to a garage all they'll want to do is change the chain. 600 please! Which is not an option because it's getting sold as soon as possible.

it may need a new oil jet, it was a very common problem on the vx 2.2 engines that had cam chain.

First one is of it starting from cold:

second one if after a quick blast around the block so it's pretty much at operating temp:

Doesnt sound like the chain to me. Ive had a few chain driven cars before and when they had problems the noise was just 'different'

However, saying that they are all different anyway so i am probably wrong

just a quick one im no expert but have had a fair bit of experience fixing corsa's as my mate manages to crash his every other week haha... but a common problem is the egr valve get clogged... i think its egr but close to the air box there is a alittle valve put ur head next to it and it may make a ticking noice... the engine then amplifies this noice and thats the normal "corsa tick".. may be worth a lissen and look... if it is that take it off and clean it or replace it

Is there any type of dampening system in that pulley? Pull the aux belt off and give it a run..

I wouldn't be suprised if it was the cams. It took several litres of oil to get it to the show on the dipstick when I first opened the bonnet. God knows how long she'd been driving it in that condition.

Ouch, like i said, the one i did an engine swap on had severe pitting to the cam lobes where they've been hitting the lifters. The passenger side of the head had turned to gunk like this...

Shouldnt take you more than half hour to whip the cam covers off with a suitable torx bit. BTW, you slacken the bolts and then pull them out, they're like raw plugs. No need for a new gasket as they're rubber.
