Petrol Engines

Here is a very short run down on the engines found in UK 306s, for more info please sign up and check the forum out!

Basically there are two types of petrol engine in the 306. The TU block and the XU block.

TU engine

The TU block is found in the 1.4 and 1.6 306s, it’s a common engine also found in the 106, 205, Citroen ZX, AX and Saxo among a few others.

TU Series 1.6i 8v

The TU3 has a displacement of 1360 cc, with a bore of 75 mm and a stroke of 77 mm. This engine has been one of the most used by the PSA Group, with applications in superminis, compacts and midsize cars, including a stint in competition use in the Citroën AX GTI Cup.

The TU5 has a displacement of 1587 cc, with a bore of 78.5 mm and a stroke of 82 mm. It was only available in 8 valve configuration in the 306. Power is 109 PS (80 kW) in most current new applications, however 90% of 306 TU5’s will be 90bhp. The TU5 has been used in motorsports by both Citroën and Peugeot.

The 1.4 unit came with 75 bhp as standard in the SPI (single point injection from <98)The 1.6 had 90 bhp and was almost identical to the unit used later in the Saxo VTR.

The XU engine

XU Series 2.0i 8v - XSi Engine1.8 and 2 litre. The XU block is tilted in the engine bay at 30 degrees, its supposed to aid the weight distribution, and by adding stoke rather than bore, its supposed to keep power levels high. All XU engines have a bore of 83mm.

The XU7 had a displacement of 1.8 L (1761 cc), with a bore of 83 mm (3.3 in) and a stroke of 81.4 mm (3.2 in). All XU7 engines are fuel injected, with a 16-valve DOHC version on phase 2/3, the XU7 JP4, also produced. Output ranges from 103–112 PS (8v/16v)

The first lot of XU engines were all 8 valve units (with exception of S16 which used the 405 Mi16 iron block unit). The XSi and cabriolet were given the 123 bhp 2 litre while the XS and XT were given the under powered 1.8 (and occasionally 1.6)

XU Series 1.8i 16v In 1997 the 2 litre 8v XU was scrapped altogether, the XSi was given a fresh new 2 litre 16v engine which was an impressive 137 bhp and much more responsive than its predecessor. As was the new 1.8 16v unit introduced in 1998. This had 112 bhp and is probably the most reliable of all the Peugeot petrol engines.

The GTi-6 was given the finest XU engine of them all in 1996, the XU10J4RS. 167 bhp with a 6 speed gearbox… An awesome car.
